Robert H. Lurie Comprehensive Cancer Center of Northwestern University

The Pathology Core Facility maintains a large number of instruments and capital equipment.

In addition to the capital equipment listed below, the facility’s equipment includes:

  • Automated Nucleic Acid Extractor (Qiagen QIA Symphony)
  • Automated Nucleic Acid Retrieval and Storage Unit (SmaRTStore)
  • Automated Slide and Cassette Labelers
  • Autostainers (Dako [x2] and Leica [x2])
  • Cell Counter (Coulter)
  • Cell Transfer System (Cytyc ThinPrep)
  • Centrifuges (Beckman Coulter [x2], Eppendorf [x4])
  • Cryostats (Leica [x2])
  • Freezers (-20°C) for short term storage for reagents and antibodies.
  • Freezer Monitoring System (Amegaview CMS)
  • Quantitative Digital Pathology System (Visiopharm)
  • Microscopes (light [x3], fluorescent [x1], multi-headed [x1])
  • Microtomes (Leica automated [x3] Leica rotary [x1] Microm rotary [x1])
  • Refrigerators (4°C) for IHC, FISH, ISH, and DNA reagents (n=2)

Histology/IHC

Dako Autostainer Link 48

The Dako Autostainer Link 48 is a compact, bench top, open system with the potential to run large batches of up to 48 IHC slides or mini batches.

Leica Microtome RM2255

PCF has Leica RM2255 brand microtomes capable of fully motorized sectioning of both paraffin- and resin-embedded specimens. Its two-in-one design concept allows motorized and manual sectioning and provides reproducible high-quality sections.

Leica Cryostat CM1900

PCF possesses the Leica CM1900, a rapid sectioning cryostat for advanced routine diagnostics in histology and clinical histopathology. This Leica CM1900 offers extremely rapid specimen freezing and frequent changes in specimen temperature.

Sakura VIP 6 Tissue Processor

The new Sakura VIP 6 Tissue Processor automatically transfers three reagents at a time including paraffin during processing and offers continuous mixing for efficient processing.

Veridiam VTA-100 Semi Automated Tissue Arrayer

The PCF has the Veridiam VTA-100 Semi-Automated Tissue Arrayer in its Histology Laboratory. It features an enhanced ability to precisely locate the desired area of tissue, extract it quickly and accurately, and deliver the entire tissue core to the top of the donor block.

Molecular

Brooks Life Science Systems SmaRTStore

The Brooks Life Science Systems SmaRTStore is an automated sample management, cold storage system with multiple format delivery and retrieval capabilities which allow it to store and access plates, tubes, and vials. It has a capacity of over 350,000 bar-coded vials.

Qiagen Inc., QIA Symphony

The Qiagen Inc., QIA Symphony is an automated nucleic acid extraction system capable of simultaneously processing up to 96 samples of with volumes of up to 2 ml.

AcdBio HybEZ Oven and RNA Scope 2.0

The HybEZ Oven provides a gasket-sealed, temperature-controlled humidifying chamber necessary for optimized RNAscope assay performance. This instrument system is capable of holding 20 slides at set temperature and high humidity for hybridization and other incubation steps specified in the Manual RNAscope FFPE Assay protocol.

The RNAscope® 2-plex Chromogenic Assay is based on ACD’s patented signal amplification and background suppression technology. The assay uses a novel and proprietary method of in situ hybridization (ISH) to visualize single RNA molecules per cell in FFPE samples mounted on slides.

Bioinformatics

Hamamatsu K.K. Nanozoomer 2.0 HT

The NanoZoomer 2.0-HT series is a system that converts glass slides into digital slides by scanning them quickly at high resolutions. It processes up to 210 slides automatically and can also automatically read a slide's barcode information and use it to name the slide file.

Amegaview Scientific Corporation AmegaView CMS

The Amegaview Scientific Corporation's AmegaView CMS is a robust, centralized and compturized monitoring system that will be deployed amongst the temperature sensitive equipment (e.g., freezers and other storage units) in the facility.

Microscopy

Olympus BX53-5 Head Microscope

With DP26 cameras including Sharp PNE602 60" Monitor
